Fool's Paradise

So USA'ers waste approximately $65 billion a year on illegal drugs. This figure covers only the cost of consumption, not law enforcement, rehab centers, etc. As a comparison this is $20 billion more than is spent annually on alcohol. So what does this mean? It means we're talking a buttload of money! Exxon "rapin' america" Mobil would be proud of these numbers. Of course poor countries, who aspire someday to have this kind of lucre to throw away on drugs from even poorer countries, want in on this lucrative industry. According to the latest data, Mexican drug cartels are now the top suppliers of cocaine, marijuana, & methamphetamines to the US. They provide almost 50% of the heroin too. I bring this whole thing up not because of its disturbing nature but because the Mexican Federal Attorney General is Daniel Cabeza de Vaca. If I'm not mistaken his surname means "Cow's Head". I could just plotz.

think how much tax revenue could be reaped if drug were legal and subject to taxation!

I am obviously in the wrong field.

I agree with Violet. Legalizing (or decriminalizing at the very least) will solve all sorts of problems. Save money on cops and ridiculous drug busting operations. And the whole business would be less lucrative so maybe we wouldn't have as much shootings and bullshit over sales. And tax revenue could be oh so useful...

Crazy what people spend their money on.

That'd be a hell of a Pandora's Box to open. And with the substitution of "tax revenue" for "Hope". I'm certain Halliburton would appreciate the extra billions of dollars though.

Decriminilizing drugs and all other forms of crime has been shown to signifigantly reduce criminal offenses ..

Mexico produces half of America's heroin? Please don't tell Lou Dobbs.

Just the other day I overheard from the junkies on my bus line hear that the '98 black tar smack from Veracruz is an excellent vintage.

of course Mexico is going to be a huge drug supplier.. that's a great job to have in a third world country.. in fact it is the job to have... its either that or cleaning windows with your spit.... or roofing.

lizard queen- I don't think they produce half of it but they provide half of it.

johnny menace- Exactly. Otherwise they're stuck doing the jobs Vincente Fox declared, "not even Black people will do". Thanks for commenting.

Legalizing drugs would only cause more problems. Look at the models of alcohol, a drug formerly illegal, but now legal. Sit down at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting sometime, then tell me those people are better off because alcohol is legal. Now magnify it a hundred times, because that's what Crystal Meth Anonymous would be like. These drugs are illegal because it's our society's way of saying "stay away from these drugs, they are dangerous." To say it's okay to take crystal meth would be the real Pandora's box.

Dear Sir,

You know what else you can do with Pandora's box? You put your weed in there.
